Overview: If you are like me pre-two months ago, you have probably never heard of this place. In fact, even when you deliberately try to go looking for it, it is a little hard to find. (For all those out there that actually read this and take my advice on where to eat, the address is 2096 Broadway St Redwood City, CA 94063). And if you decide to Yelp it because you don’t trust me or are so shocked at the wonderfulness of the review, it has the coveted 4 ½ stars. That one of the things that goes down in my book as being truly impressive. So why go here? Well, quite frankly, it is the best breakfast I know of in Palo Alto, Mountain View and Redwood City combined. If that isn’t enough to intrigue you, please do continue reading and I will do my utmost to convince you.
The Space: It’s adorable. I am from Tucson, Arizona where we have breakfast diners that have been there from the forties and this place reminded me exactly of those type of establishments. It’s very clean, not overly decorated, but gives off a sense of being very homey. It’s extremely small so call ahead if you are going on a busy weekend morning but there always seems to be some extra space on the diner bar stools. Overall, I love the atmosphere, and the food is even better.
The Service: Considering that it is such a small space, it is easy to attract someone’s attention and get whatever you need. More than that, all the waiters and everyone are extremely nice and personable and also seem to have personal relationships with many of the customers that come in (I am not a regular yet but one can dream).
The Food: Now for the meat of the review. This place has all in all delicious, tastes like home-cooked food. Usually when I go to breakfast places I go with the tried and true pancakes or omelet (usually Southwestern—I am a bit biased) but here I went with the biscuits and gravy on a whim. That whim proved to be delicious. The biscuits melted in my mouth and the gravy was the perfect accompaniment. The sausage was also quite good, and the orange juice tasted homemade. My breakfast date had an omelet with jalapenos, grilled onions, tomatoes and ham and thought it was fresh and very good. The omelet eggs is mainly perched on top of the rest of the omelet contents but it looked great and apparently tasted better.
The Prices: Almost all the entrees are under $10, but with sides and drinks and everything it comes up to around $15.
The Hours: Mon-Thu, Sun 8 am – 4 pm
Fri-Sat 8 am – 6 pm
Though I have only tried it for breakfast. Try to avoid key brunch times (11-12:30ish) because the restaurant is quite small and tends to fill up quickly.
Overall, I love this place and highly recommend it for breakfast. However, if you are only looking to get a snack I also recommend the Palo Alto Creamery for breakfast, because they have the most delicious bread around. So go ahead and try both—your tummy will be grateful.
