On the Campaign Trail: Monday

32 ASSU Senate Candidates appeared at a Meet ‘n Greet in Old Union on Monday Night. A scattering of attendees showed up to mingle with the candidates and hear their platforms.

The SOCC (Students of Color Coalition) slate was well represented, and a new slate, Victorious Secret was also in attendance.

Many of the candidates spoke about the usual issues: senate outreach, mental health, undergraduate advising, and environmental sustainability. A few suggested that they would push for a 24 hour lounge. Others talked about working to break the “Stanford Bubble.” Most of the candidates mentioned better communication between the ASSU and the student body.

Despite the relative similarity of platforms, there were a few candidates who had some different ideas-
George Lu wants to lobby the administration to subsidize public transportation beyond the Marguerite so that undergrads can explore the Bay Area.

Byron Shorty, a freshman, wants to make Stanford’s websites and maps more accommidating to students with disabilities.

Lily Fu is concerned that Stanford’s standards for proof of sexual assault are lower than most other American universities. She wants the ASSU to pressure the administration to lower its standards and make Stanford a safer campus for women.

The Senate candidates will be at White Plaza tomorrow afternoon.
