The Stanford You Should Know But Don’t

This feature is our spotlight on some of the great opportunities that abound at Stanford but aren’t quite as well known as we’d like them to be. This week, Jack Duane ’13 takes a look at the Rebele grants offered by the Communication Dept. to undergraduates.

The Rebele Grant offers funding support for budding journalists.
There are so many opportunities at Stanford that sometimes it can be overwhelming to keep track of them all. During the winter of my freshman year I was lucky enough to notice a flyer for the Rebele Internship Program. What followed was perhaps the most rewarding experience of my college career.

The Rebele Program grants stipends up to $5,000 for Stanford students who intern at newspapers over the summer. As newspapers’ revenues have decreased, so has their willingness to employ inexperienced college students. The Rebele Program enables aspiring journalists like myself to pursue their dreams.

The summer after my freshman year I worked for The Bay Citizen, a brand new online-only newspaper in San Francisco. I enjoyed the experience so much that I participated again last summer – this time working as a sports reporter for the Cape Cod Times in Massachusetts. I’m not sure if I will decide to become a journalist after college, but I will forever be grateful to Rowland and Pat Rebele for my two summers in the program.

Anytime I talk to a Stanford student who is trying to find a summer job, I encourage them to look into the Rebele Internship Program. Even if you don’t see yourself being a journalist in the long term, your summer at a newspaper will be rewarding. Learn more here: http://comm.stanford.edu/internships/rebele/
